Playing Away UK
22 May - 03 Jul 2004
Consisting of eight large-scale colour photographs from each of the four ‘home nations’, Playing Away UK celebrates the Euro 2004 football championships by taking a quirky yet affectionate look at the very bottom end of the football: the playing fields, yards and streets where a variety of makeshift goalposts signal the places where young (and not so young) people gather for a kickabout. The goalposts which Gabie records range from lines scratched onto a garage door to barely-standing lengths of local timber. Their materials, surroundings and the pitch on which they stand invariably reflect the nature of the communities in which the goalposts are situated, and the exhibition as a whole will comment implicitly on contemporary British society.
