Amarachi Okafor
02 Oct - 25 Oct 2008
Gallery 6
The final season of exhibitions in Oriel 6&7 opens with the last exhibition in the Affrica West series. Amarachi Okafor from Nigeria works at the boundaries of sculpture and installation art. Her pieces are often composed of the quotidian and everyday material we would normally recycle. In her hands items such as plastic bags are worked into larger pieces which monumentalize the everyday whilst questioning the changing visibility and acknowledgement of the simplest of objects across cultures. Her work embodies a tenet of the Nigerian lgbo culture in which it is said that ‘the mind is a bag’ and that each individual carries his or her own bag.
