Seven artists from Wales have been invited by Oriel Wales have been invited by Oriel Mostyn Gallery to view the national collection in Cardiff and choose works for their exhibition, with one of their own works for the exhibition, with one of their own works to be shown alongside those chosen. Each artist’s response has been unique and highly personal, providing insights into the ways that artist’s work relates to the work of others and the way in which a collection of art can be used to further current practice. The result is an exhibition as diverse as the collection is wide, providing an all-embracing mixture of painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics, ranging from 1730 to the present, and including works by Antonio Canaletto, Thomas Barker of Bath, Sir Kyffin Williams and Ivor Roberts-Jones amongst others. This is the first exhibition involving contemporary artists in ArtShare Wales, the visual arts partnership formed between the National Museum and Gallery, Oriel Mostyn Gallery and four other museums and galleries around Wales. It is supported by a grant from the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication.
