Corners at Home
20 Jun - 31 Aug 2007
Gallery 6
Whilst closed in 2007 and 2008, Oriel Mostyn is organizing a series of projects in partnership with, amongst others, the Conwy Feast Food Festival, Venue Cymru in Llandudno and Galeri Caernarfon. This exhibition forms the first of these.
It takes the form of a series of small intimate paintings depicting the corners of rooms and the placement of objects therein. The works are meditations on the importance attached to objects of a personal nature, objects of no great value but steeped in familial history: gifts, holiday mementos and so on. Whilst these are paintings, they have a sculptural dimension since they depict the placement and re-placement of objects over the passage of time:
The artist comments: ‘I have noticed how my Mum and Gran place ornaments, furniture, materials and other personal objects around the house in their unique way. There is a very definite order to the way the objects are arranged and they return to the same position after the period of cleaning has finished. This routine is a very personal one and impossible to describe in words… The work in the exhibition follows a developing theme: Memories of people, situations and objects from my childhood growing up on a farm in North Wales and from particular moments and objects I have come across while travelling in India and Sri Lanka.’
The exhibition is organised by Oriel Mostyn Gallery for Venue Cymru.
A reception at Venue Cymru will be held to open the exhibition on Thursday 5 July 2007 at 6pm. Martin Barlow, Director of Oriel Mostyn, will give a talk on the work of Eleri Jones to open the exhibition in Venue Cymru’s foyer.
