Join us to mark the opening of Etchings for Primo Levi by Jane Joseph and hear Jane in conversation with Emma Hill, Director of the Eagle Gallery, London.

Together they will discuss Jane Joseph’s work in the exhibition, reflect on the writings of Premo Levi and the challenges to creativity it presents.

Emma has known Jane for over twenty years and has shown her work at the Eagle Gallery on many occasions. In 1991 she established EMH Arts Imprint with the aim of publishing collaborations between artists and writers.

Jane Joseph

Jane Joseph was born in Surrey and studied at Camberwell College of Art, London, 1961-65, where she received the Leverhulme Award, and later at the British School in Rome, where she was a recipient of the Abbey Award in 1991-2.

In 1970 she set up a studio near Crickhowell, Powys and then moved to London in 1980,where she has beeen since. From the early 70s onwards, Joseph has been exhibiting consistently at some of London’s key galleries including Anne Berthoud Gallery, Angela Flowers Gallery, the Morley Gallery, Piers Feetham Gallery, the Beardsmore Gallery and more recently, the Eagle Gallery.

Her work regularly appears at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (since 1971) and has been included in a number of significant group exhibitions including the Cleveland International Drawing Biennial (1975 & 1977), International Print Biennale, Bradford (1986), Hunting Art Prizes, Glasgow and London (1997, 2003) and the International Biennale of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana (2005).

Her work is held in many public and private collections of art including, amongst others, those of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery; British Museum, London; Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Government Art Collection, London; Hebrew Union College, New York; Herbarium Library, Royal Botanic Garden, Kew; Imperial College, London; Lindley Library, Royal Horticultural Society, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester and the Yale Center for British Art, USA.

Emma Hill

Emma Hill is the Director of the Eagle Gallery, London, and has worked as a curator and writer since graduating from Oxford University in 1984. In addition to establishing EMH Arts Imprint in 1991 she has written about artist’s books for many magazines including Printmaking Today and Art Review. Her publications include With the Melting of the Snows (Paul Coldwell and Martin Bell), Site Unseen (Terry Smith and Mel Gooding), And a year ago I commemorated a missed encounter (Jane Bustin and Andrew Renton), and Lo (Julia Farrer and Judith Thurman).

Hill has curated exhibitions in contexts such as the ICA and Aldeburgh Music Festival and has collaborated with organisations including Almeida Opera, the British Library, the Foundling Museum, the Norwich and Norfolk Music Festival and Sadler’s Wells Theatre to mount site-specific installations.
