Explore

15 May - 28 May 2008

Explore has given eight galleries in England and Wales the chance to focus on disabled and deaf people as audiences, participants and artists. The galleries have worked in cluster groups to develop more inclusive approaches; ultimately to become more welcoming to disabled and deaf people.

Oriel Mostyn has worked alongside Oriel Wrexham and Oriel Davies to deliver twenty two workshops with four local artists for established groups in our local area.

Beverly Belshaw has worked with the pupils of Ysgol y Gogarth over twelve fibre-art sessions to create abstract silk wall hangings. These workshops were inspired by landscape and the recent artists shown in Oriel 6&7 who used landscape as inspiration in their work.

Eleri Jones has worked on three Drawing and Mark-making workshops at Canolfan Yr Orsedd. These sessions experimented with marks that match words, sounds and textures using Indian ink, chalks and wax, and different tools to produce colourful individual drawings. Eleri also led two textile printing workshops for the members of the Deaf and Blind Forum which resulted in creating stencil textile prints. Looking at forms found in nature, such as flowers, leaves, and trees to make simple outlines which were then cut out and used as a stencil.

Sian Huchinson led three workshops at Canolfan Yr Orsedd. These sessions included using profiles of the participants as a starting point to create individual abstract images. Sian also lead two workshops for members of the Deaf and Blind Forum, these sessions looked at works by leading contemporary artists for inspiration to create large, textured and abstract collage pieces.

Rachel Rosen led an Experimental printing workshop for the members of the Deaf and Blind Forum. This session used touch as a starting point to develop the participants’ perception of particular parts of their own face, then developing this technique to create a 3D enlarged wire structure of the area and using the structure to inspire various forms of printing.

Shape, the UK’s leading disability arts organization and Engage, the National Association for gallery education worked together with funding by The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust, through The Ann Rylands Special Project to provide this opportunity for the eight galleries.

Oriel Mostyn are proud to have taken part in this project and enjoyed this fantastic opportunity that Explore has been able to offer. This has allowed us to further our relationship with Ysgol Gogarth, Canolfan Yr Orsedd and the Deaf and Blind Forum to ensure that our collaboration will continue in the future.
