JAMES MORRIS: A LANDSCAPE OF WALES

James Morris explores landscapes, looking for the stories that they tell. His interest is primarily in how people have changed the land, and by the layers of history evident in the world about us. The photographs in this exhibition show the Welsh landscape – many with its people – at a decisive point in its history a decade after the country’s National Assembly was brought into existence.

These are the contrasting realities of the landscape seen by the visitors to tourist hot spots seeking pleasure and escape, and that experienced by inhabitants of the post-industrial terraces and back streets, the suburbs and small towns. Reflecting on issues of identity, deprivation, exploitation and regeneration, the large-scale images show a land of beauty and of hardship; challenging tourist board clichés and reflecting upon the place that Wales finds itself in today.
