More Than Anything
21 May - 02 Jul 2005
More Than Anything showcases three substantial new installations by Maud Cotter. Much of Cotter’s recent work has been preoccupied with boundary conditions.
The exhibition takes its title from a large and ever-growing work compromising thousands of interlocking plywood elements. Partly a metaphor for connection, it may take the form of a wall or tunnel and works to confront the viewer with the complexity of structural systems and the relationship of human beings to them. Amalgam is structurally similar but actively seeks the viewer’s engagement. Visitors to the gallery are invited to leave mementos and personal items within its structure. The third major piece is The Cat’s Pyjamas, an installation of altered household items and found objects (for example, chairs, lamps, tables) which encapsulate our puzzling relationship with the spatial and material quality of things.
