Nnenna Okore
09 Aug - 29 Aug 2008
Gallery 6
Sculptures and wall pieces by Nnenna Okore form the second exhibition in the Affrica West season. Her intricate works celebrate the transformation of discarded material into cultural artefact. Materials include newspapers, wax, cloth, rope, clay and sticks, all subjected to a labour-intensive process of weaving, twisting, sewing, dyeing, waxing and rolling. Whilst Okore’s sculptures have impeccable ‘green’ credentials, they also serve to question the assumption that, for an immanent environmental revolution to succeed, it need start in the West. The artist studied under El Anatsui at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
