Kwami is very much a ‘second generation African modernist’, whose jewel-like abstractions simultaneously recall a golden age of European abstraction whilst being informed by, and rooted in, the colour and form of his native Ghana. The paintings in this exhibition are distillations of time and place, marking the travels, backwards and forwards, of an artist with feet in both Africa and the West. Importantly, they are examples of a particular strand of contemporary African painting in which pluralism does not make an issue of difference. Kwami will exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in October.
